Who We Are
The Islamic Alliance for Safe, Ethical, and Responsible AI (IASER) is an organization rooted in Islamic principles that enjoins good applications of artificial intelligence and works to prevent harmful ones, as defined by the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Our Mission
Amr bil-ma’ruf wa nahy ‘an al-munkar: enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, applied to the age of artificial intelligence.
وَلْتَكُن مِّنكُمْ أُمَّةٌ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ ۚ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
“Let there be a group among you who call others to goodness, encourage what is good, and forbid what is evil; it is they who will be successful.” (Qur’an 3:104)
We believe AI is among the most consequential technologies humanity has ever developed. Its impact on human dignity, justice, privacy, and life itself demands principled engagement. Islam provides a comprehensive moral framework for this engagement.
Our Principles
We advocate for AI that serves humanity, and stand against AI that harms it. These principles guide both efforts.
Safe
AI must be developed and deployed with safeguards that protect human life, dignity, and well-being. Safety is not the opposite of progress; it is what makes beneficial AI possible. We support AI applications that serve humanity and oppose those deployed without adequate protections, particularly autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
Ethical
AI must reflect moral principles: fairness, dignity, privacy, and truthfulness. Systems that perpetuate injustice or strip human dignity are unacceptable.
Responsible
Those who build and deploy AI bear a trust. They must be accountable for what their systems do and the consequences they produce.
Active
Principles without action are insufficient. When we see harm, we are obligated to act, not merely to observe or comment. When we see the opportunity for positive applications of AI, we encourage their building and may even build some of it ourselves.
مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِقَلْبِهِ، وَذَلِكَ أَضْعَفُ الْإِيمَانِ
“Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.” (Sahih Muslim)
Cooperative
This work cannot be done alone. We cooperate with all who share the goal of beneficial AI, across faith traditions, disciplines, and borders, while refusing to cooperate in what causes harm.
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
“Cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” (Qur’an 5:2)
What We Do
1. Inform & Educate
We make information about Islam and AI accessible. We manage data sources, produce educational content, and keep our community informed about developments at the intersection of AI and Muslim life.
2. Community-building
For Muslims deeply involved in AI (researchers, engineers, ethicists, policymakers), we create a home. A place to connect, share challenges, and support one another in navigating this space with integrity.
3. Guide
We offer guidance to Muslims seeking to use AI in a positive, principled way, whether as individuals, educators, or community leaders navigating an increasingly AI-shaped world.
4. Engage
We work with AI businesses and companies to help them understand the dimensions of Islam relevant to their products, services, and decisions, fostering respectful and informed engagement with Muslim communities worldwide.
5. Advocate
We speak out for positive applications of AI and against harmful ones. We issue public statements, engage policymakers, and make the Islamic ethical perspective heard in debates that shape AI policy and regulation.
How We Organize
Steering Committee
IASER is guided by a steering committee of Muslims with deep expertise in AI, policy, or ethics. The committee sets strategic direction, approves public positions, and ensures the organization’s work remains grounded in Islamic principles. Members serve as trustees (ummana’) of the organization’s mission.
Islamic Advisory Board
In addition to the Steering Committee, there is also an Islamic Advisory Board for helping to ensure that any actions, documents and policies are consistent with Islam’s teachings.
Community
The broader IASER community is open to those who share our mission, whether they work in AI, study it, are affected by it, or simply care about its direction. The community is the engine of IASER’s work: organizing activities, contributing expertise, raising awareness, and holding the steering committee accountable to the values we profess.
Call to action
Right now we are looking for:
- Steering Committee members who can commit to 5 hours/month.
- Islamic Advisory Board members who can commit to 2 hours/month.
